New affordable homes making progress in Calderwood

Taylor Wimpey have commenced works on 69 new affordable homes within our Calderwood development. They will provide a mix of two and three-bedroom homes for social rent, which will be available for future customers of Home Group Scotland.

The overall masterplan at Calderwood incorporates a design that aims to create a sense of place and maximises the latest Scottish Government Planning Policy for ‘Designing Places’ where it aims to integrate with the local area. The development also makes significant contributions towards providing additional local education capacity including the delivery of the new Calderwood Primary School, as well as local transport improvements that are part of Section 75 legal agreement between lead developer Stirling Developments and West Lothian Council.

Sandra Brydon, director of Home Group Scotland, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Taylor Wimpey on our first development in West Lothian. The mix of two and three bedroom houses will offer customers affordable living in this popular area – something that has been in demand for a while – and I’m excited to see their development.”

Pauline Mills, land and planning director at Taylor Wimpey East Scotland, said: “We are so pleased that working together with Home Group Scotland to deliver 69 affordable homes is progressing so well. It marks another milestone on the journey towards creating a diverse place to call home that complements the existing local community of Calderwood.

Calderwood Primary School opens

Calderwood Primary School has opened its doors to pupils.

Our new school is settling in well to Calderwood and fast becoming the hub of the community.

The site for the new school is at the heart of the emerging Calderwood masterplan development, located adjacent to the new village square (yet to commence) which will consist of retail/housing and mixed use development.  The school forms one edge to the village square and the design was influenced by a necessity for the school building to fulfil the role of a community orientated public building.  The school will be a significant public face of the newly emerging square and Calderwood settlement, and will symbolise a high level of investment in the education for the new population of school pupils, providing a twenty first century contemporary building for the emerging and growing Calderwood population.

Central to the scheme is a double height dining space that offers flexibility for breakout teaching and provides connection to all areas of the school.  The adjacent gymnasium opens up to the dining area, allowing flexibility and movement for larger groups or performances whilst the heller-up seating offers opportunities for smaller groups to gather or learn with views towards the village square.  Classroom accommodation is semi-open plan providing connection with adjacent flexible breakout zones whilst offering views over the landscaped playground.

We are very proud of the school and look forward to seeing it flourish in the years to come.

Mobility Hubs at Calderwood

Stirling Developments have held discussions with Marian Marsh, Senior Development Officer for CoMoUK, to bring the first Mobility Hub in Scotland to Calderwood.

We aim to have Calderwood’s Mobility Hub up and running this summer. We are also looking to create smaller hubs or hublets across Calderwood and the forthcoming Park and Ride at Kirknewton Railway Station.

Shared transport, typically car club cars and shared bikes or e-bikes, can offer new transport choices which help respond to climate change. The new National Planning Framework Positions Statement recommends the Scottish planning system should be rebalanced so that climate change should become the guiding principle. Since lockdown, more people are appreciating their local environment, and by reducing the need for some parking, there is scope to cater for this change in values by freeing up space for a greener environment.

Calderwood shuttle bus trial

Stirling Developments are carrying out a shuttle bus trial that will run from Calderwood to the West of Edinburgh business clusters including Edinburgh Park, South Gyle and Gogarburn. Along with this, another service running direct to Kirknewton railway station will be offered.

Improving public transport journey times between Calderwood and Edinburgh is key to a successful system. The planned coxydene junction upgrade, with bus priority measures onto the A71, is an example where public transport can be promoted as a better alternative to cars journeys and encourage active travel.

The shuttle bus route, in time, will be bolstered by a Lothian Country public bus route.

Guy Fawkes Comes to Calderwood!

Ahead of Guy Fawkes Night, Stirling Developments ran a guy-making competition for the children of Calderwood. Basic guy-making materials were dropped-off at The Larder Cafe at Calderwood on the run-up to judging day; this included pillow cases, old clothes and lots of straw from a neighbouring farm!

Ray Kirk (Director of Projects, Stirling Developments) was tasked with judging the guy entries on Saturday 2nd November at The Larder Cafe at Calderwood. This was no easy task as every entry was imaginative, creative and displayed lots of community spirit!

Each child earned a small prize for entering the competition. Stirling Developments was delighted to present the children who created the winning entry with tickets to Clip ‘n Climb at Edinburgh International Climbing Arena (EICA) in Ratho! Well done to all.
